Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has publicly announced his intention to vie for the role of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lamido, a prominent member and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, made his declaration via a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, stating he would visit the party’s national headquarters to obtain the required forms.
He wrote: “By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman.”

Lamido expressed a strong dedication to strengthening the party, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, in preparation for forthcoming elections.
He added that his “commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable.”
The PDP is scheduled to elect a new National Chairman at its upcoming national convention, following a decision at its 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on August 25 in Abuja to reserve the National Chairman position for the North while zoning the 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
Lamido’s move comes despite an earlier consensus endorsement by northern PDP stakeholders of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) for the chairmanship.
This has fueled internal strife, as factions linked to Lamido and another senior party leader, Nyesom Wike, have “rejected Turaki’s endorsement, arguing that the process lacked proper consultation.”
This split highlights the increasing “tensions within the PDP over its path to the 2027 elections, as the party seeks both internal unity and credible leadership.”
