Nnamdi Kanu Drops Plan To Call Witnesses In Defence, Gives Reason

The leader of the banned separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has reversed his prior decision to present witnesses in his defense during his trial for alleged terrorism.

The court had previously postponed the trial until October 27 for Kanu to begin presenting his defense.

Kanu had earlier formally requested the court for time to review his case file, indicated his “intention to call witnesses,” and applied for “witness summons.”

During the resumed hearing, Kanu informed the court that he had reviewed his case file and had subsequently “realised that there is no valid charge against him.”

He maintained that since he was “convinced that there is no valid charge against him and that he was subjected to unlawful trial,” there would be “no be need for him to open any defence.”

In response, Justice James Omotosho instructed Kanu to formally “file a written address to that effect and serve the prosecution.”

The judge also cautioned Kanu, advising him to “consult experts in criminal law on the consequences of the option he has chosen.”

The trial was consequently adjourned until November 4th, 5th, and 6th, either for the “adoption of the final written addresses based on the defendant’s position that evidence led so far and the charge have not established any case against him, or for the defendant to enter his defence.”
