President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Professor Mahmud Yakubu, the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for a significant new role as a non-career ambassador designate.
This nomination was included in a list of 32 names sent to the Senate for confirmation on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Professor Yakubu’s nomination comes swiftly after the expiration of his second tenure as INEC Chairman, which concluded in October 2025.

His period at INEC included the organization of the 2023 general elections that ushered President Tinubu into office.
