US Halts Immigration Applications For 19 Countries

The US government has announced a halt to immigration applications for citizens from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Yemen, and Haiti, according to an official memorandum released on Tuesday.

This decision intensifies the nation’s sweeping crackdown on migration.

Authorities have paused the processing of green card and citizenship applications for people from nations already subject to travel restrictions, which were announced by President Donald Trump in June.

The 19 nations affected also include Venezuela, Sudan, and Somalia, along with Burundi, Chad, Republic of Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Turkmenistan.

Senior US officials indicated that the move to “starkly tighten restrictions on immigration” was fueled by the recent shooting of two National Guard soldiers, which resulted in one fatality.

The main suspect in the shooting is an Afghan national who entered the United States during the mass evacuations that took place as foreign forces withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.

The man pleaded not guilty to murder charges on Tuesday.

The memorandum from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) asserted its instrumental role in preventing terrorists from seeking safe haven in the United States and ensuring that USCIS’ screening and vetting and adjudications prioritize the safety of the American people and uphold all US laws.

Citing the suspected shooter as an example, the memorandum said the US had recently seen “what a lack of screening, vetting, and prioritizing expedient adjudications can do to the American people.”
