President Bola Tinubu has formally written to the Senate requesting its consent to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin for combat and peacekeeping operations.
The President’s letter was read aloud during the Senate plenary on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

According to the letter, the request is necessary under Section 5(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and is imperative for “peacekeeping as a sister country.”
President Tinubu further explained that the deployment is a result of a direct request for assistance from the Republic of Benin, citing the close “ties of friendship and brotherhood” between the two nations.
This formal request follows the military intervention on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Soldiers, operating under the banner of the “Military Committee for Refoundation” and led by Lt Col Pascal Tigri, had briefly seized the state television station in Cotonou to announce the overthrow of President Patrice Talon’s administration.
The coup attempt was quickly thwarted by the deployment of fighter jets and troops from Nigeria, authorized by President Tinubu.
