Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has passed away.

Sources confirmed to SaharaReporters on Tuesday morning that the former head of the nation’s judiciary died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia.

The news of his passing was further solidified by an official condolence statement from the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) National Headquarters in Abuja, dated December 16, 2025.

In the message titled “NAMLAS Condolence Message on the Passing of Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON,” the association described his death as a “monumental loss” to the judiciary, the legal profession, and the entire nation.

The association praised the late jurist as a “towering figure of integrity” who dedicated his decades-long career to the principles of fairness and the rule of law.

The statement noted:“As Chief Justice of Nigeria, he discharged his responsibilities with wisdom and restraint, leaving behind a legacy of service that will continue to guide generations of legal practitioners.”

Beyond his formal duties on the Bench, NAMLAS highlighted his role as a mentor and “fatherly pillar” to young Muslim law students across Nigeria, offering moral guidance and support to the next generation of legal minds.

The association extended its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family, the Nigerian government, and the Muslim Ummah, praying that Allah grants him “the highest abode in Jannatul Firdaus.”

Justice Muhammad’s career spanned several decades, culminating in his leadership of the nation’s highest court during pivotal moments in Nigeria’s legal history.
