FG Declares Public Holidays For Christmas, New Year Celebrations

The Federal Government has officially designated Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays in celebration of Christmas and Boxing Day.

Furthermore, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to mark the New Year.

The announcement was made in a statement released on Monday, December 22, 2025, by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In the message, the Minister encouraged Nigerians to contemplate the core virtues of the season, specifically the “values of love, peace, humility and sacrifice” that define the birth of Jesus Christ.

Addressing the nation’s diversity, Tunji-Ojo appealed to all citizens, regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds, to dedicate the festive period to interceding for the country.

“Tunji-Ojo also called on citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity, to use the festive season to pray for peace, improved security and national progress.”

The Minister concluded by advising the public to stay “law-abiding and security-conscious” throughout the holiday celebrations and extended his heartfelt wishes for a “Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year” to all Nigerians.
