Tragic Death Announced As Petrol Tanker Rams Into Akpabio’s Convoy

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced the tragic death of a dispatch rider in his convoy, Ibrahim Hussaini, who was killed on Sunday after a petrol tanker rammed into the motorcade.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio shared the harrowing details of the accident, which occurred in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, after his convoy had picked him up from the airport.

The Senate President described the incident with deep sorrow:“We went to Oyo State for the installation of our colleague but the vehicles that came to pick me at the Ibadan airport…….Unfortunately my dispatch rider was run over by a tanker driver and his head was shattered. We just buried him 15 minutes ago in Kogi State. He left two wives and four children,” Akpabio said.

In a move to support the grieving family, Akpabio appealed to federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to grant automatic employment to the deceased officer’s children.

He vowed to take personal responsibility if no public vacancies were found:“By the grace of God, I’m recommending two of his senior children for employment immediately in any parastatals that may wish to, otherwise I’ll employ them personally in any of my private concerns,” he added.

Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West further clarified that Hussaini was a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who had served in Akpabio’s convoy since 2023 and was due for retirement next year.

Karimi also informed the Senate of another loss—the death of Ibrahim Tukur, a driver who had served Senator Isah Jibrin for 25 years before passing away at home on Saturday.

Following these announcements, the Senate President led the chamber in a one-minute silence to honor both the late dispatch rider and the deceased driver.
