What Malami’s Trial Reminds Me Of – Dino Melaye Speaks

Former Senator Dino Melaye has spoken out regarding the arraignment of the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, noting that the situation brings back memories of his own legal battles during Malami’s time in power.

Sharing his thoughts on his X account this Tuesday, Melaye reflected on the numerous legal challenges he faced while Malami headed the Ministry of Justice.

He characterized those past prosecutions as baseless.

“Former AGF, Abubakar Malami, along with his son, have appeared in court today,” Melaye wrote. “Reminded me of how I was appearing in different courts when Malami as AGF was prosecuting me over frivolous cases including taking over one of the police cases against me. Wish him well.”

Melaye’s comments coincided with the Federal High Court in Abuja’s decision to remand the former AGF in prison.

Justice Emeka Nwike ordered that Malami, his son Abdulaziz, and an associate, Hajia Bashir Asabe, be held at the Kuje Correctional Centre until their formal bail applications can be considered.

The judge declined an immediate oral request for bail presented by the defense lead, J. B. Daudu, SAN, ruling that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) must be allowed to file a formal response to the application. The court has scheduled January 2, 2026, to decide on their release.

The defendants are currently facing a 16-count charge involving an alleged N9 billion money laundering scheme.

The EFCC maintains that the former minister utilized these illicit funds to build a massive real estate portfolio.

“The former minister allegedly used the proceeds of the illicit funds to acquire high-value properties in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano and other cities across the country,” the prosecution alleged.
