What Happened At Balogun Market In Lagos [VIDEO]

Massive crowds on Tuesday took over Balogun Market on Lagos Island as residents engaged in a final wave of year-end shopping, causing a total breakdown of movement within the commercial district.

The scale of the congestion was captured in a viral video circulating online, showing the market completely gridlocked.

Traders and shoppers were seen struggling to navigate the narrow walkways, with human traffic coming to a near standstill in what is recognized as one of the busiest trading hubs in Lagos.

The footage showed thousands of buyers jostling for space as they scrambled to finish their 2025 holiday shopping, focusing on items like clothing, footwear, and household goods.

This chaotic scene is largely attributed to the typical Nigerian habit of “panic buying,” where many citizens postpone their festive preparations until the final moments of the year.

While Balogun Market is famous for its year-round wholesale and retail dominance, the year-end surge has pushed the facility beyond its capacity.

Despite the extreme overcrowding, no major security or safety incidents had been reported at the time of this publication.

However, the situation serves as a stark reminder of the logistical challenges Lagos faces during peak holiday periods.
