The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced the official USSD code *315#, empowering Nigerians to instantly verify whether their smartphones, feature phones, and other SIM-enabled gadgets are certified and authorized for operation on domestic telecommunications networks.

Rolled out as a core component of the Commission’s robust Type Approval Compliance framework—which officially went into effect on October 7, 2026—the service aims to shield consumers from substandard equipment while safeguarding network integrity across the country.

Explaining the purpose of the platform, the regulatory body noted that the tool is particularly vital for prospective buyers vetting second-hand gadgets or acquiring mobile units imported from international markets.

In addition to the USSD option, subscribers can perform checks digitally through the official NCC Device Checker web portal at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker.

How to Check Your Phone’s NCC Approval Status Using *315#

To confirm whether a device is fully type-approved and cleared for local networks, follow these steps:

  1. Open Your Dialler: Launch the phone application on the device you intend to verify.
  2. Dial the Code: Enter *315# directly on the mobile unit and initiate the call.
  3. Follow the Prompts: Navigate the interactive menu provided by the NCC Device Checker interface.
  4. Review the Status: Check the response displayed on your screen to verify whether the handset meets regulatory standards.

If you need to evaluate a different device or if the automated prompt requests further details, you can locate your gadget’s unique 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number by dialing *#06#, checking your settings menu, or inspecting the original retail packaging.

What Does the NCC Verification Cover?

The regulatory review applies to all electronic appliances that connect to local mobile networks, encompassing smartphones, tablet computers, cellular modems, data routers, SIM-enabled laptops, and Point of Sale (POS) terminals.

By screening equipment through the official channel, consumers protect themselves against cloned, pirated, or counterfeit hardware that frequently compromises user security and call quality.

Will Non-Compliant Phones Be Disconnected?

Under the strengthened compliance guidelines, unverified or counterfeit devices risk losing access to domestic mobile networks. However, the regulatory agency has clarified that an unsuccessful validation screen does not automatically mean a device is fake.

Phones already active and connected to Nigerian telecom networks prior to the October 7, 2026 launch date were automatically granted verification status, sparing existing owners from taking manual steps.

What to Do If a Device Fails Verification

Consumers who receive an unverified prompt are advised not to panic or immediately discard their handsets. Instead, users should follow on-screen guidance, reach out to the retail vendor, contact their respective network provider, or call the NCC toll-free support line at 315 for professional assistance.

The commission has also warned the public to remain vigilant against fraud, emphasizing that users should exclusively rely on the official *315# code or the verified web portal, and never share personal credentials or verification tokens with unauthorized callers.
