In a major political realignment, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has revealed that several influential former leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and key allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have pledged their support to President Bola Tinubu.
The Governor made this disclosure on Thursday, January 1, 2026, during the state’s New Year banquet in Port Harcourt.
Among the prominent figures cited were former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Austin Opara, former Rivers Governor Celestine Omehia, and former Transport Minister Abiye Sekibo.

Fubara noted that the public appearance of these leaders at the event served to debunk long-standing political blackmail that he was secretly conspiring with anti-Tinubu forces.
He maintained that he remains unfazed by the ongoing political turmoil in the state, drawing strength from his faith.
Addressing his critics, the Governor insisted he was not merely “barking,” but was strategically navigating the political landscape.
“Let’s not be fooled by whatever that is happening. Cesar, in one of his quotes, said, ‘the only reason why the dog barks is because it doesn’t understand.’ When the dog starts barking, maybe it is seeing something it does not understand. We are not barking because we understand. We know where we are going.”
Looking ahead, Fubara declared that 2026 would represent a year of “complete liberation” for Rivers State.
He expressed absolute confidence that his administration would meet its objectives and that his supporters would eventually be vindicated.
“I want to assure all of us that governance will continue in its full force. What we have set out to do in our state we will continue with it. We will make sure that by the time we finish everyone who stood with us will be proud, honored and can walk in the street of Port Harcourt with your shoulders high that you took a decision that was right at that time.”
Reflecting on the struggles of the past year, the Governor remarked that he had emerged from the “battles” stronger than before.
“The journey wasn’t easy in 2025, but we give God all the glory that we survived and became more stronger. Those things that we couldn’t change or fight taught us lessons and made us strong… I am very proud to say we have not lost anything, it is just a matter of time and the speed we can use in this year 2026 to go about our businesses we will gain all the lost grounds.”
Fubara concluded by assuring the people that his administration would never force anyone into wrongdoing and would face future challenges with courage, believing that “when the time comes, every necessary bridge will be crossed.”
