In a passionate social media broadcast, prominent activist and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls Movement, Aisha Yesufu, has declared her intent to oppose any 2027 presidential ticket that features Peter Obi as a vice-presidential candidate.
Yesufu’s ultimatum follows the recent defection of the former Labour Party standard-bearer to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the subsequent rumors of a potential alliance where he might serve as a running mate.
“So let me go back to the Mr Peter Obi conversation where everyone is sort of like, ‘oh, you know,’ where people are like, ‘you should run as vice president,’” she said. “Me, and I’m giving you people my word now… if Peter Obi is running with anyone as the vice president, as the running mate to that person, I will work against that ticket.”

The activist clarified that her opposition is not rooted in personal power but in a rejection of what she views as a flawed political culture that asks the most competent individuals to play second fiddle.

“I’m not saying that I have any influence. I’m not saying that I’m one big anything,” Yesufu stated. “In my little capacity, I will work against that ticket. Even if I don’t support any other person, I will work against that ticket.”
Yesufu drew a direct comparison between the treatment of Obi and the systemic exclusion of women from top leadership roles in Nigeria, arguing that both are victims of a “deputy-only” mindset.
“Why are we always asking the best to be second? They’ve done Peter Obi the same way they treat women in Nigeria. They will always put you in the deputy position — deputy this, deputy that, running mate.”

She further lamented that this political pattern is so deeply ingrained that even less qualified candidates are automatically placed above competent individuals based purely on gender or political hierarchy.
“The only thing I say to them is, even if it’s a goat that is running for president, you people will put that Aisha as vice,” she noted. “Because as far as I’m concerned, as I’m a woman, automatically you see me as vice and nothing else. That cannot, we cannot have that situation.”
Ultimately, Yesufu maintained that the qualities Obi brings to the table—specifically his public image as a compassionate leader—are too significant to be relegated to a secondary office.
“Peter Obi right now, he talks about empathy, he talks about somebody who cares,” Yesufu added.
