The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, has officially refuted social media allegations suggesting that negligence or a lack of medication led to the death of Ifunanya Nwagene, a singer who passed away following a snake bite.
In a statement released on Sunday, February 1, 2026, the hospital’s head of clinical services, Bioku Muftau, clarified that Ms. Nwagene died due to severe neurotoxic complications and not a lack of resources.
The hospital expressed its condolences to the family, stating, “First and foremost, we express our deepest condolences to the Nwagene family during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of a loved one is never easy, and our thoughts are with them.”
According to the facility, the medical team acted immediately upon her arrival, providing resuscitation, oxygen, and the necessary medication. “Our medical staff provided immediate and appropriate treatment, including resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the administration of polyvalent snake antivenom,” the statement clarified.
The hospital explained that while they were preparing to move her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), her health declined rapidly.
“Despite all efforts to stabilise her condition and transfer her to the ICU for further treatment, she experienced a sudden deterioration just before the transfer,” the management noted.
They added that despite diligent efforts to perform CPR and other life-saving measures, “we were unable to revive her.”
The deceased, popularly known as Nanyah, was a talented soprano with the Amemuso Choir. The choir confirmed her passing on Instagram, noting she died on January 31, 2026.
They described her as a rising star, stating, “Amemuso Choir regret to announce the sudden demise of our beloved soprano, Ifunanya Nwangene, who passed away yesterday, 31 January 2026, at the Federal Medical Centre due to a snake bite.”
Addressing the online outcry and accusations that the hospital lacked antivenom, the FMC management insisted that such claims “are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation.”
They urged the public to trust verified facts over social media rumors, reaffirming their commitment to high standards of care: “We are committed to transparency and integrity in our practices and will continue to pursue excellence in patient care.”
