The Presidency has officially verified the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

According to the formal explanation, the former police chief stepped down due to “family issues which require his undivided attention.”

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the move via a letter submitted on Tuesday.

Despite the official reason, insiders suggest a different narrative.

According to sources within the Villa, Egbetokun was actually directed to step down during a Monday evening meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

“It was in that meeting he was asked to go,” a top official stated under anonymity.

Observers noted the IGP’s arrival at the Presidential Villa around 6:40 pm in his official vehicle, appearing without his cap, for a meeting that was described as an urgent summons.

“He was called in. It wasn’t a routine visit,” one source clarified.

Egbetokun’s departure follows a period of intense pressure and criticism regarding the country’s security challenges.
