The Burundian government has officially announced the sudden death of Gabby Buguga, the Minister of Communication and Media, following what they described as a car accident at dawn on April 16, 2026.
Government spokesman Jerome Niyonzima stated, “The Government of the Republic of Burundi deeply regrets to announce….the unexpected death of the Minister of Communication and Media, Mr Gabby Buguga, which occurred at dawn on April 16, 2026, following an accident.”
Despite the official statement, local sources and police have raised concerns over the mysterious circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Minister’s body was found by farmers inside a damaged 4×4 vehicle in a palm plantation in Kivoga, approximately 10 kilometers north of Bujumbura. The vehicle was discovered about 10 meters off a notorious and rarely used road.
A police source confirmed the identity of the body but noted significant inconsistencies, stating, “The cause of his death has not yet been determined.”
The source highlighted that while Buguga suffered a “deep wound on his skull” and the rear and right side of the car were badly damaged, “the cabin is intact, why there was no impact at the front of the vehicle.”
Furthermore, while some officials claim an investigation is underway “to determine the cause of his death,” others allege that “the government doesn’t want a scandal; it has decided to bury the case without an official investigation.”
The police source concluded by noting that “the death of the Minister of Communication has many unanswered questions.”
