Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo recently suggested that Nigeria’s victory in the 1967–1970 civil war might have been unattainable if not for the assistance of the Niger Republic.
During an appearance on News Central, he emphasized that the logistical pathways through Niger were essential for delivering supplies to Nigerian soldiers on the frontlines.
“Without Niger Republic, winning the civil war would have been hard,” Obasanjo remarked, pointing to the historical significance of their neighbor’s cooperation.
Obasanjo, who served as a military leader in the late 70s and later as a democratically elected president, utilized these historical reflections to voice his disapproval of Nigeria’s current diplomatic strategy in West Africa.
He specifically noted the strain in relations following the July 2023 coup against Mohamed Bazoum, criticizing the decision to disconnect electricity and shutter borders.

He reminded the audience of the deep-rooted partnership between the two nations, citing the development of the Kainji Dam as a prime example of mutual benefit.
“When we were building the Kainji Dam… we made commitments to Niger Republic regarding electricity because of their cooperation,” he explained.
The elder statesman expressed deep regret over what he perceives as a slide in Nigeria’s continental standing.
He argued that the nation is no longer a primary architect of regional diplomacy or policy. “Today, Nigeria is not at the table,” he stated, casting doubt on the country’s current impact within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and broader African affairs.
Furthermore, he asserted that recent diplomatic missteps have damaged years of strategic investment in ECOWAS.
Obasanjo concluded by reflecting on Nigeria’s legacy of supporting liberation movements across the continent, reminding the public of the significant political and financial aid once provided to nations like South Africa and Angola in their battles against apartheid and colonial rule.
