A wave of public anger has broken out after a graphic video surfaced on social media depicting the extrajudicial killing of a restrained suspect by armed individuals identified as police officers in Delta State.
The footage, shared on X on Tuesday, shows a violent scene involving men in plain clothes standing next to a vehicle marked “Nigeria Police Force, Effurun Area Command.”
The suspect is shown on the ground with his limbs tied, begging for mercy and referring to the men as “officers.”
“Officers, abeg,” the man cried out in the video. “I’ll tell you everything. It was my friend who deceived me.”
While the suspect was giving details about where his friend could be found, shouting, “He’s at Sapele. I’ll take you to him,” one of the armed men shot him in the leg.
“He’s at Sapele. I don’t know anything. “Please. I’ll take you to him. He’s at Sapele. I’ll take you to him, officer. Officer, I didn’t know,” the victim screamed.
As the man continued to plead, the same individual fired another shot into his head as witnesses watched. The group then loaded the body into the police vehicle and left the area.
The clip has led to widespread criticism online, with many demanding justice.
Activist Harrison Gwamnishu called the video “disturbing,” adding, “This is live execution carried out by some armed men alleged to be Police officers attached to Effurun Area Command, Delta State Command.”
In response to the outcry, the Complaint Response Unit of the Nigeria Police Force stated on X that they have started looking into the matter.
Replying to Gwamnishu, the CRU stated, “Your complaint is hereby acknowledged, investigation initiated. Here is your Tracking number: TCRU100927.”
