Abejide Dumps ADC, Gives Reason

Leke Abejide, the representative for Kogi State’s Yagba Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, has officially declared his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The lawmaker, who secured two terms in the House of Representatives under the ADC banner, shared the news during a press briefing in Abuja this Friday.

During the session, he reflected on his history with the organization, stating, “I joined ADC, nurtured it to national recognition as a political party with representation in both national and state assemblies. The party structure was funded by me as the then national leader of the party, which I have willingly relinquished to the current national chairman, Honourable Nafiu Bala Gombe, and I wish him good luck as he continues to fight for his rights in court.”

Explaining his motivation for the exit, Abejide remarked, “I have decided to change the broken bricks in the ADC and become a cornerstone in a better political party with a strong structure that will benefit my people.”

This move follows a Thursday Supreme Court verdict regarding the party’s internal leadership struggle, which led the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore the leadership team headed by David Mark.

Abejide alleged that Mark and other figures within the opposition coalition had succeeded in “hijacking” the party, a situation he previously attempted to fight through legal channels.

“It is a painful decision but necessary to save my political future from those who came to destroy my former political party that I laboured hard to nurture and loved dearly,” he noted.

He further explained that his legal counsel had suggested he vacate the party to protect his career prospects amidst the ongoing instability, a recommendation he has now followed. While he has yet to name his new party, he suggested an announcement is imminent.

“You will know any moment from now where I am heading to. Maybe by the time I obtain my form, it will be clear to you,” Abejide concluded.
