Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has strongly denounced the extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old musician Oghenemine Ogidi by a police officer in Effurun.
In a statement released Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the governor expressed profound shock over the incident, asserting that no individual should endure such brutality.
He labeled the act as a barbaric and serious violation of human life. “The killing of Mena Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman is unwarranted, unprovoked and barbaric. It is unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life,” the governor stated.
While offering his deepest sympathies to the victim’s family, Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the safety and dignity of all residents are top priorities for his government.

He noted, “No citizen deserves to be subjected to such brutality and death. The protection of lives remains paramount under my administration.”
The governor also praised Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu and the police leadership for their rapid disciplinary response, which included the dismissal and planned prosecution of the responsible officers.
He confirmed that the state would track the legal proceedings to their conclusion and support the bereaved family.
The fatal encounter took place on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after Effurun Area Command operatives intercepted Ogidi, who was allegedly trying to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and ammunition.
During the arrest, ASP Nuhu Usman reportedly fired his weapon, resulting in the musician’s death.
Following the conclusion of internal disciplinary reviews, the police confirmed on Wednesday in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid that the Inspector-General had approved the dismissal and criminal prosecution of the officers involved in the April 26, 2026, shooting.
