Nollywood has been thrown into a state of grief following the passing of Oby Kechere, a well-known actress and director.
Her death was confirmed on Friday by the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), which reported that she passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, after battling a long illness.
Ms. Kechere earned widespread fame for her portrayal of “Ms Koi Koi” in the 2002 hit comedy Aki na Ukwa.
DGN President Uche Agbo released a statement expressing the guild’s profound sadness, noting that the actress also served as the Vice Chairman of the DGN’s Abuja Chapter.
In the official announcement, he stated, “It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Madam Cecilia Oby Kechere.”
He further added that, “On behalf of the National Executive Council and the entire DGN family, I extend my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.”

Having started her career in the early 2000s, Ms. Kechere was highly regarded for her versatility as a performer and her skill as a director.
In the statement, she was praised for her commitment to professional ethics and her role as a mentor to many within the Abuja filmmaking community.
