The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has characterized the exit of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso as a “setback” while maintaining that it is not a “fatal blow” to the party’s goals for 2027.
National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi addressed the move during an interview on Arise News’ Prime Time, following the duo’s transition to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Acknowledging the impact of their departure, Abdullahi stated, “Is it a setback? The answer is yes. Is it a fatal blow? The answer is no, because the objectives are very clear. They are still the same.”

Despite the fact that Obi and Kwankwaso combined for over seven million votes in the 2023 elections, Abdullahi argued that past performance does not guarantee future results.
The spokesman admitted to personal disappointment over the news, saying, “Personally, I’m not happy they left. And I cannot tell you why, because I have my own sentiments. I’m not happy they left.”
However, he suggested their exit brings a sense of freedom to the party’s operations. “In a way, it’s a bit of relief. Now we can focus on really doing what we need to do without being under the pressure cooker that they were trying to put us in. I am not disheartened. No, no, not at all,” he added.
Despite the split, Abdullahi emphasized that the ADC would not engage in hostilities with the former members.
“We don’t think they are our enemies. We are not going to go into a dogfight with them,” he noted.
