A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has weighed in on widespread reports indicating that former President Goodluck Jonathan has officially entered the 2027 presidential race.
Addressing journalists in Abuja immediately after completing his screening exercise, the former Anambra State governor made it clear that he is entirely unbothered by the growing list of competitors entering the field.
Instead, Obi maintained that his primary focus remains on rebuilding the nation and establishing a system of meritocracy.

He emphasized his vision of creating a country where the child of an ordinary citizen can rise to the highest heights without needing influential political connections.
“Democracy is about people offering themselves for service and being voted for. I’m not in any way going around looking at who is contesting. I’m concentrating on how to build a better Nigeria,” Obi stated.
The opposition leader further highlighted his core objectives as the political landscape shifts toward the upcoming general elections, stressing the need for safe borders and economic stability.
“My priority ahead of the 2027 presidential election is to build a united, secure and prosperous Nigeria through inclusive governance anchored on the constitutional principle of federal character,” he explained.
He concluded by warning that the deep-seated fears currently troubling everyday citizens over safety must be eradicated for the country to truly move forward.
“Nigeria must become secure enough for citizens to move freely without fear, while families should no longer live in anxiety over insecurity and killings,” Obi said.
Obi will come out last in the forthcoming presidential election.
