2027: Popular Former Kano Governor And Ex-APC Senator Loses Out On NDC Senatorial Ticket

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has picked a different senatorial candidate for the Kano South District, overlooking Kabiru Gaya, who had entered the party hoping to make a return to the Red Chamber.

Mr Gaya left the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 5 April to pitch his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), before moving again to the NDC alongside former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Following his political movements, the ex-lawmaker had suggested he would run for the Senate again under the umbrella of the opposition party.

Nevertheless, Mr Gaya, who had earlier spent two terms in the Senate on the platform of the APC from 2015 to 2023, had his aspirations dashed on Sunday.

The NDC chose to settle for Kassim Batayya as its consensus candidate during a stakeholder meeting at Mr Kwankwaso’s Miller Road home.

Saifullahi Hassan, who serves as media aide to Mr Kwankwaso, made the announcement of Mr Batayya’s consensus candidacy through a short post on Facebook. Mr Hassan subsequently uploaded a brief video showing Mr Gaya backing the chosen candidate.

Be that as it may, Mr Gaya pointed out in the video that he was not present at the venue when the conclusion was made.

Currently, the NDC chapter in Kano is holding its primary congresses to elect candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly.

Mr Gaya previously governed Kano State during the brief Third Republic between 1992 and 1993.

He went on to serve as the lawmaker representing Kano South until he lost the 2023 election to Kawu Sumaila, who ran under the then New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

In a twist of events, Mr Sumaila recently defected from the NNPP to the APC and has secured the ticket for the 2027 polls.
