The All Progressives Congress (APC) has lost Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, following his formal defection to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) over claims of marginalisation and an absence of internal democracy in the ruling party.

The federal lawmaker made his exit known in a press release made available on Monday by Comrade Sabo Mohammed, his Special Adviser on Media and Communication.

The release indicated that Senator Buba finalized his departure from the APC on Sunday, May 24, 2026, after holding talks with political allies, key figures, youth organizations, women groups, and his followers throughout Bauchi State.

Clarifying his reasons for jumping ship, Senator Buba blamed the APC for abandoning equity and internal democracy, stating that authentic loyalists and local pillars of the party were consistently shut out of key choices.

He portrayed the PRP as an organization built upon fairness, accountability, openness, broad representation, and masses-focused guidance, stating that the political platform continues to honor democratic tenets and constitutional rules.

He noted that his transition to the PRP was propelled by a desire to fortify democratic rule, safeguard the welfare of the masses, and offer attentive direction to the populace of Bauchi State.

Democracy can only thrive where political parties uphold fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active participation of members in decision-making processes,” the senator stated.

He emphasized the urgency for nationalist figures to come together to combat destitution, joblessness, insecurity, financial struggles, and bad governance nationwide.

“Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses,” he added.

The lawmaker gave his word to the people of the state that his focus on their advancement and comfort stays intact, swearing to sustain impactful representation across the board.
