The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to go on an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 1, 2026.
This directive came from the national leadership of the union to protest the ongoing captivity of kidnapped teachers and students, whose rescue and safe release remain hanging in the balance.
The union expressed that the prolonged captivity of the victims has sparked widespread fear and anxiety among educators, discouraged parents from sending their wards to school, and caused tension to mount across various communities in the state.
This development follows a directive issued on Sunday by President Bola Tinubu for the immediate recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to help rescue the abducted teachers and pupils.
In an official release signed by the NUT chairman, Oyo State wing, Comrade Hassan Fatai, the NUT noted that the industrial action is “aimed at drawing the attention of government authorities to the urgent need to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the abductees without further delay.”
The leadership urged all educators to comply fully with the strike order, remain law-abiding, and stay safe at home while the action lasts.
Furthermore, the union stood in solidarity with the kidnapped teachers, students, and their grieving families, emphasizing that lawful engagements with relevant government authorities would continue until the victims regain their freedom.
The union wrapped up by assuring its members that it stays fully committed to safeguarding the welfare and security of teachers and learners throughout the federation.
