The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State is currently in mourning after the passing of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, a member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family and the younger brother of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, broke the news in an official statement, confirming that the Prince died on May 30, 2026.
His Royal Majesty, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, spoke affectionately of the late royal, describing him as a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished brother, and a dedicated uncle whose departure has left a profound void within both the royal household and the entire kingdom.
The traditional ruler emphasized that Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo was “a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, whose roots run deep in the history, dignity and tradition of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.”
He further remarked that the late Prince would always be honored for his grace, humility, and unwavering commitment to both his family and the local community.
The monarch assured that the legacy and memory of the deceased will forever remain alive in the hearts of everyone who crossed paths with him.
According to the statement, the late Prince leaves behind his wife, daughter, brothers, sisters, and other relatives.
The palace offered its deepest condolences to the immediate family during this challenging time.
The Ogwashi-Uku monarch concluded by urging all indigenes of the kingdom, both within Nigeria and across the diaspora, to lift the royal family up in their prayers and stand by them throughout this period of grief.
