Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, a former Ogun Central senator, ex-Health Commissioner, and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated May 31, addressed to the state party chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, she cited a history of “persistent disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment” by the party’s leadership in Ogun State as the reason for her departure.
Obasanjo, who had recently vied for the party’s governorship ticket, challenged the consensus process that selected Senator Adeola Solomon (Yayi) for the 2027 election, labeling it as contrary to APC guidelines.
She noted that while she had committed to supporting a consensus candidate, she was excluded from the decision-making process.
Furthermore, she alleged that her supporters faced intimidation and were barred from entering the venue where the candidate was unveiled.
Despite these grievances, she stated, “I agreed to support whichever candidate emerged through a consensus process, but I was not consulted before Senator Adeola was presented as the consensus candidate. Some of my supporters were denied access to the venue and intimidated. Nevertheless, I accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and publicly congratulated Senator Adeola that same night.”

She further explained that after Senator Adeola requested a meeting with her supporters, three specific requests were presented to him, to which he promised a response within a week.
She stated, “Following his emergence, Senator Adeola requested a meeting with my supporters. During that meeting, three requests were made, and he promised to respond within one week. More than two months later, no response has been received.”
Citing a recurring lack of appreciation for her contributions, she concluded, “The treatment I have received since then has reflected a consistent pattern of rejection and disrespect. When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcomed.”
While exiting, she thanked President Bola Tinubu, Chief Sanusi, and the Ogun Central Senatorial leadership for the courtesy shown to her during her tenure.
Obasanjo had returned to active politics earlier this year, registering in Ward 11, Ibogun, in Ifo Local Government Area, before launching her failed bid for the party’s governorship nomination.
