A 35-year-old woman, identified as Osasere, has been arrested by the police after she allegedly threw her five-year-old son into River Ovia in the Onwa community of Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State.
The horrific act was reportedly carried out on the advice of a seer who described the young child as a ‘python spirit’.
The incident, which has sparked massive outrage among community residents, took place right at the bank of River Ovia where the mother allegedly dumped the boy into the heavy currents.
According to eyewitnesses, local fishermen working in the area spotted the woman tossing the child into the water and quickly intervened.
The fishermen chased after her and protected her from an angry mob that was ready to lynch her on the spot.
They then put her in a canoe to help search the waters for the boy.

However, efforts to find and recover the child’s body have not yielded any results.
In a viral video making the rounds on social media, Osasere explained that she gave birth to the boy five years ago but grew deeply worried because he had still not started walking.
She further revealed that following his birth, every single attempt she made to get pregnant again resulted in a miscarriage.
The suspect claimed that a friend eventually took her to see a seer for a spiritual consultation.
According to her, the seer told her that her five-year-old son was a ‘python spirit’ who was behind her continuous miscarriages by allegedly “eating” the babies in her womb.
Osasere said the seer explicitly advised her to throw the child into River Ovia if she ever wanted to successfully carry another pregnancy.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, stated that both the mother and the seer have been taken into custody while investigations continue.
The police authorities added that further updates will be shared as the investigation moves forward.
