Felix Ademe Isaac, a 28-year-old Lieutenant of the Nigerian Army, has been laid to rest with full military honours following his death during a mission to rescue abducted teachers and pupils in Oyo State.
The young officer was buried on July 10, 2026, at the 23rd Armoured Brigade Cemetery in Yola, Adamawa State.
The victims of the May 15, 2026, abduction—which saw gunmen invade Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School—regained their freedom on July 10, 2026.
Reports regarding the circumstances of Lt. Isaac’s death vary; some sources suggest his convoy was struck by explosives at the National Park, while others indicate he encountered a landmine planted by the Ansaru terrorist group responsible for the kidnapping.
Born on August 25, 1997, Lt. Isaac was among the security personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during the high-stakes mission.
The Nigerian Army acknowledged the loss in a statement following the successful rescue, noting, “It suffices to note that the operations were carefully planned and executed to avoid collateral damages and to equally ensure that the innocent children and teachers were safely rescued. However, there were some casualties on the part of the security forces.”
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed his gratitude for the return of the victims while honoring the fallen personnel.
“Really grateful for the safe return of the children and teachers abducted from Oriire LGA 56 days ago. Our priority now is to ensure they are reunited with their families and support their rehabilitation after this traumatic experience,” the governor stated.
He further added, “We also commend the security agencies that took part in the rescue operations for their sacrifices. May the souls of those who paid the ultimate price rest in peace and may God comfort their families.”
The complex rescue operation involved security operatives from over 10 different agencies and was commanded by Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife, the General Officer Commanding the 2 Division of the Nigerian Army.
