The Nigerian government has officially announced that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will henceforth be known as the “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway.”
Minister of Works, David Umahi, stated that the decision to rename the project was made to honor the President’s role in initiating the vision.
“That highway is named President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway. By the powers conferred on me as Minister of Works, in consultation with my Permanent Secretary, the Honourable Minister of State, directors and staff of the ministry, we decided to name it after him because of his dream for it,” Umahi said.
He further claimed that Tinubu conceived the project approximately 27 years ago while serving as the Governor of Lagos State, adding, “He had that dream about 27 years back as Governor of Lagos State. It is one thing to dream and another thing to have the grace of God to actualise that dream. This is one man that dreams and has the grace and divine mandate to actualise that dream.”
Providing updates on the 750-kilometre project, the minister noted that construction is moving forward across several sections. Section One, running from Victoria Island to Eleko Village, includes a 25-metre median reserved for a future railway.
Section Two, extending to the Lagos-Ogun boundary, is about 60 per cent complete and expected to be substantially finished by late November.
Progress is also reported on sections in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, and Ondo states, with Section Three at 30 per cent completion and Section Four at 20 per cent.
Beyond this project, the minister shared updates on other infrastructure initiatives, including the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway and the Trans-Sahara Highway.
These ventures, part of the Federal Government’s “Legacy Projects,” are intended to boost economic integration and improve road infrastructure across Nigeria.
