The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to political appointees serving under President Bola Tinubu, demanding that they actively mobilize support for the party at the grassroots level or relinquish their positions.
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, handed down the directive on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with members of the Progressive Local Government Chairmen’s Forum, led by Dr. Mustafa Jibrin, Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State.
The forum met with the party leadership to present its grassroots mobilization strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Rebuffing claims of neutrality by appointees with non-political backgrounds, Yilwatda insisted that accepting a government role automatically comes with party obligations.
“You cannot hide behind the claim of being a technocrat to avoid your political responsibilities. If you accept a political appointment, you must also play your role as a politician,” Yilwatda stated, adding that individuals unwilling to participate in party affairs should not accept political appointments in the first place.
To enforce compliance, the APC chairman urged local government chairmen to closely monitor the political performance of appointees in their respective domains and report those who fail to support the party at the ward level.
He noted that council chairmen are in the best position to evaluate whether appointees maintain a genuine political presence in their communities.
“You know who is delivering politically at the grassroots. An appointee may be performing well in the office, but if they have no political presence in their ward, that is a problem. Anyone who accepts a political appointment must also accept the responsibilities that come with politics,” he said.
Yilwatda emphasized that administrative success alone will not guarantee victory for the APC in 2027 without effective grassroots engagement.
He called on the local government chairmen to pinpoint areas where appointees are underperforming and identify strategic gaps to strengthen the party’s chances in future polls.
He concluded by pledging the party’s full backing for the forum’s mobilization efforts, including supporting the inauguration of state coordinators and collaborating on a mass endorsement rally in Abuja for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
