The West African Examinations Council has branded as false a viral document claiming that results for candidates across 50 secondary schools in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination were withheld due to examination malpractice.
The examination body cleared the air through a formal statement published on its official X handle on Wednesday, advising the general public to completely ignore the publication.
Denouncing the document, the council stated: “FAKE NEWS ALERT: Please disregard the message below. It did not originate from WAEC,”
Bearing a forged date of August 2, 2026, the deceptive document was allegedly directed to principals of public and private secondary schools throughout Nigeria
It falsely asserted that results from 50 institutions had been blocked because of malpractice, commanding them to tender comprehensive reports in two weeks or face further penalties. The fabricated circular named establishments spanning multiple regions, including Lagos and Abuja.
Furthermore, the document carried a fraudulent signature attributed to the Head of WAEC Nigeria National Office, Dr Amos Dangut, along with fake council letterheads and official seals. To clear confusion, WAEC published a copy of the fake notification plastered with a prominent red “FAKE” watermark.
This clarification follows closely behind the official announcement of the 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE results for school candidates.
During the release, WAEC reported that 167,486 results out of 1,950,726 total candidates—amounting to 8.59 percent—were officially withheld over suspected malpractice. The body explained that the affected scores were seized due to infractions such as smuggling mobile phones into examination halls against standing prohibitions and organized cheating rings.
Additionally, WAEC confirmed that specific supervisors and invigilators caught facilitating cheating have been apprehended and will face disciplinary consequences through relevant state education ministries.
