The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has advised Nigerians to carefully examine food labels before purchasing any packaged food items.

The agency shared this guidance in the first episode of its #NAFDACExplains series posted on its official X handle.

Packaged food refers to items sealed or wrapped in containers prior to sale, including bread, biscuits, instant noodles, bottled drinks, and canned or sachet milk.

Speaking in the video, Abubakar Umar, a food safety expert in NAFDAC’s Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Directorate, urged consumers to look beyond branding, packaging, or price tags.

He stated: “When you buy a packaged food, what usually catches your attention first? Is it the brand? The picture on the packaging? Or perhaps the price? For many of us, that’s where we stop. But there’s something even more important, and that is the food label.”

Umar explained that food labels provide essential details to help consumers make informed health choices.

He recommended checking the date marking first to confirm the product remains within its shelf life.

He noted: “So, the next time you pick up a packaged food, take a few seconds to read the label. Start by checking the date marking to ensure that the product is within its shelf life.”

Shoppers were also advised to review the ingredient list to avoid items tied to personal allergies or dietary restrictions.

Next, consumers should check the nutrition panel for details on vital components.

According to Umar: “Take a moment to read the nutrition information or nutrition facts panel, which tells you about nutrients such as sugar, salt, fats, and protein, helping you make choices that support a healthier diet.”

Confirming regulatory approval is another crucial step before making a purchase.

He added: “In addition, you should always look for the NAFDAC registration number, which indicates that these products have gone through NAFDAC’s registration process before being placed on the market shelves.”

In its official statement, NAFDAC summarized the four key checkpoints as the date marking, ingredient list, nutrition information panel, and registration number.

The agency emphasized the value of taking a brief moment to evaluate products.

The statement read: “A few seconds spent reading the label can help you make informed decisions for yourself and your family.”

Umar concluded the video with a direct reminder for shoppers.

He said: “So, before you buy it, read it. And before you eat it, understand it. Until next time, stay informed; stay safe.”
