Former lawmaker representing Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has shed light on her decision to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and seek a return to the National Assembly 15 years after her initial departure from the Senate.
Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stated that her renewed ambition is motivated by a commitment to restore the Ogun Central Senatorial District to the level of growth and quality representation it experienced during her previous tenure in office.
She made these remarks on Wednesday in Abeokuta while attending the official launch of the PDP campaign for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections in Ogun State.
Reflecting on her tenure as senator from 2007 to 2011, Obasanjo expressed concern over what she described as the erosion of the milestones achieved during her time in office by subsequent representatives.
She emphasized that running for the senatorial seat again is part of a broader effort to reclaim the district’s former standing and deliver impactful governance.
“My desire to take back our senatorial district to where it was when I represented it is the reason why I came back to the PDP, and take up the challenge of restoring our lost glories,” she said.
The PDP senatorial aspirant had previously spent a brief stint with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) before making her way back to the main opposition party. She reiterated that her ambition to serve another term in the red chamber was fueled by the necessity to reverse the declining fortunes of the constituency.
The campaign event, which drew thousands of PDP faithful and supporters, was conducted across the three Federal Constituencies within Ogun Central Senatorial District.
Speaking earlier at the event, the Chairman of the campaign committee and PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, voiced confidence that the party would reclaim leadership and elevate the living standards of citizens.
Adebutu stressed that eradicating poverty would remain a core focus of the PDP, assuring the crowd that better days were ahead, while urging members to stay dedicated and protect their votes on election day.
In the same vein, Adebutu’s running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, charged electors to reject any form of intimidation throughout the voting exercise. She encouraged voters to protect their franchise by remaining at the polling centers after voting, supervising the counting process, and escorting the results down to the final collation point.
“After voting, don’t say that you are done and leave. Cast your vote and stay with it at the polling unit. Stand by your vote, follow them to the collation centre,” she said.
She concluded by encouraging residents across the state to turn out in large numbers and cast their ballots for all PDP candidates in the upcoming polls.
