Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has revealed his reasons for parting ways with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to pitch his tent with President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During a Tuesday interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, Ortom explained that his alignment with the current administration represents a calculated political move.
He noted that his allegiance shifted toward Tinubu openly around the time his former G5 associate, Nyesom Wike, took office as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Reflecting on his choices, the former governor maintained that he harbors zero regrets about opting to back Tinubu for the upcoming presidential race.
Although he famously backed Peter Obi during the 2023 electoral cycle, Ortom adjusted his strategy once Tinubu secured the presidency.
He stated, “I made a statement, and I have no regret making that statement, that in 2027 some of us will support Tinubu to win.”
Ortom further added, “In 2023, I supported Obi. When Nigerians spoke, and President Tinubu was president, I said, ‘If you can’t beat them, you join them.”
