Nigerian Army Reshuffles Top Leadership

The military hierarchy in Nigeria has rolled out an extensive restructuring of its top brass, moving numerous generals and brigadier generals into critical command, operational, and staff positions.

Driving this transition, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu sanctioned the new deployments to fine-tune operational efficiency, reinforce executive command, and better synchronize the military framework with the nation’s shifting security landscape.

Confirming the changes via a social media update on Wednesday, Acting Director of Army Public Relations Colonel Appolonia Anele explained that the exercise heavily emphasizes vital combat theaters and administrative posts to ensure that the “right leadership, experience and expertise” are deployed to yield decisive outcomes.

Key among the operational shifts includes Major General IA Ajose transitioning from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to take charge as the Theatre Commander for the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI.

Meanwhile, Major General AE Abubakar shifts from Operation HADIN KAI to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, stepping into the role of Dean for the Faculty of Operational Research.

Additional major realignments feature Major General AM Alechenu moving to the Heritage and Future Centre from the Defence Headquarters Garrison, and Major General RT Utsaha taking over as Commander of the Defence Headquarters Garrison.

Further structural changes see Major General AM Umar leaving the Department of Civil-Military Affairs to assume the position of Commandant at the Army War College Nigeria, while Major General UM Alkali rotates into the Civil-Military Affairs department.

Leadership updates also place Major General GS Muhammed as the Director General of the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, while Major General JE Osifo shifts to chair the Military Pension Board. Concurrently, Major General IE Ekpenyong takes charge as the Director of Engineering Services within the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics.

Tactical and field command posts have likewise experienced notable adjustments. Brigadier General AA Bello transitions from the 6 Division Garrison under Operation DELTA SAFE to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.

New brigade-level assignments involve Brigadier General MS Adamu heading up the newly formed 8 Brigade from the Nigerian Army Women Command, and Brigadier General MS Sule transferring from Operation ENDURING PEACE to command the 27 Task Force Brigade.

Additional divisional shifts place Brigadier General I Sule at the 6 Division Garrison, Brigadier General E Azenda at the 2 Division Garrison, and Brigadier General AS Bugaje directing administration at the Land Forces Simulation Centre.

Addressing the newly posted personnel, the COAS charged the officers to “justify the confidence reposed in them through exemplary leadership, operational innovation, professionalism and unwavering commitment to duty”.

He further urged them to remain focused on the Army’s constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.

Military authorities concluded that the reshuffle forms an essential part of an adaptive command strategy aimed at optimizing multi-agency coordination and handling current security challenges.
