Nigerian Lecturer Found Dead At South Africa Residence

Ayodele Odularu, a 51-year-old Nigerian lecturer and researcher operating at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, was discovered dead inside her home located in the Eastern Cape Province.

Gbadebo Odularu, the brother of the deceased, confirmed the tragic passing to PUNCH, noting that the incident occurred on August 16.

Expressing deep skepticism regarding natural causes, an anonymous relative disclosed that the events leading up to her death remain shrouded in ambiguity, prompting the grieving family to demand a comprehensive official inquiry.

In an official GoFundMe campaign launched by Gbadebo on behalf of the relatives, Odularu was fondly remembered as a dedicated academic who poured her energy into research, community empowerment, and intellectual growth.

“Ayodele was far more than a sister. She was a cherished daughter, aunt, friend, mentor, scholar, and a source of encouragement, compassion, wisdom, and strength to everyone blessed to know her,” the family expressed.

The tribute further characterized her as a resilient, generous, and warm-hearted individual who consistently uplifted those around her and made everyone feel deeply valued and inspired.

Within the academic ecosystem of the University of Fort Hare, Odularu functioned as an independent senior researcher, driving impactful studies and contributing extensively to scholarly advancement.

To celebrate her legacy, the institution organized a solemn memorial service in her honor on Thursday.

Her passing unfolds against a backdrop of mounting anxieties regarding violence and hostility directed at Nigerians and other foreign nationals residing in various regions of South Africa.

Notably, since June, the Federal Government spearheaded evacuation efforts for stranded Nigerian citizens fleeing the nation due to escalating xenophobic unrest.

Records indicate that 1,716 Nigerians have successfully been evacuated as part of ongoing federal interventions addressing the security threats.

While investigations into the exact triggers of Odularu’s death are yet to yield clarity, her relatives continue to push for transparency and official accountability.
