FG Threatens To Shut Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Gives Reason

The Federal Government has warned that it will shut down the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway within two weeks unless motorists adhere to established safety measures and operational conditions improve along the corridor.

The warning was delivered on Monday by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, during an inspection tour of the highway infrastructure.

Dare explained that the potential closure follows direct instructions from the Minister of Works, David Umahi, in response to recurring safety violations, infrastructure vandalism, and unlawful activities along the route.

“Within two weeks, if there’s no improvement on all these issues, then we have no option but to come back and shut down this road,” he said.

The Federal Controller noted that road users can utilize the alternative Lekki-Epe Expressway, clarifying that the coastal highway remains actively under construction and typically would not have been opened to vehicular traffic prior to the completion of its critical bridges.

The Lagos stretch of the coastal highway is divided into two phases totaling approximately 103km, with Section 1 spanning 47km and Section 2 covering 56km.

Dare added that the two sections feature 20 major bridges—10 allocated to each section—many of which are still undergoing active construction.
