The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has announced that the party will reintroduce fuel subsidy in an alternative format if it wins the upcoming presidential election.
Kwankwaso made this revelation during a media interview on Arise TV, criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the subsidy on his inaugural day in office as a misstep that has dragged Nigeria into severe economic turmoil.
The former Kano State governor noted that multiple approaches exist to cushion fuel costs without reverting strictly to the previous administrative framework.
He emphasized that an NDC administration would prioritize constructing additional domestic refineries and executing practical strategies to crash pump prices nationwide.
Kwankwaso stated, “We’re bringing back fuel subsidy in our own way. There are so many ways to do that. Now we have a refinery built by a businessman and I am sure more will be built.”
He further added, “If individuals in this country can build refinery, I see no reason why the government will not build refineries.”
Reiterating the party’s ultimate goal for the energy sector, he concluded, “We in the NDC will do all it takes to put the price of oil down.”
