The National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has urged the party’s presidential standard-bearer, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to call their support group, the OK Movement, to order.
The development follows an action by the Obi/Kwankwaso Movement to independently establish a 59-member Presidential Campaign Council for the opposition platform.
Speaking while formally welcoming former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, into the party, Dickson argued that a support group lacks the authority to set up a presidential campaign council, labeling the move as absurd.
The NDC leader cautioned the OK Movement against trying to rival or usurp the responsibilities of the registered political party, reminding them that they remain strictly a support base.
According to Dickson, “Support groups don’t compete with political parties that are sponsoring candidates. They don’t compete for supremacy or space. Support groups are what they are.”
He added, “They don’t play the role of a political party; they don’t sponsor candidates. They only provide grassroots mobilisation support. They don’t convert themselves into critics of the political party.”
Emphasizing the boundaries expected of such auxiliary bodies, he noted, “We have thousands of support groups, and many more are welcome. Even the ruling party has several support groups. None of them will ever say they are setting up a presidential campaign council. It is uncalled for.”
He concluded with a stern caution, stating, “It is unheard of, nonsensical! Those who have the duty to call people to order should do so.”
