Omo-Agege Clears The Air On Supreme Court Judgment Allegedly Disqualifying Him From 2027 Election

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has clarified that Thursday’s Supreme Court judgment regarding the Electoral Act 2026 did not disqualify him from contesting the 2027 Delta Central Senatorial election.

The clarification was contained in an official statement released by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Godwin Anaighe, on Saturday in Asaba, Delta State.

Omo-Agege, who is the candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Delta Central, explained that the apex court made no order against him and never declared him ineligible for the upcoming legislative poll.

According to the former lawmaker, the Supreme Court’s decision centered strictly on legal interpretation, restoring Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7), and 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026, which regulate political party membership registers and candidate nomination procedures.

He described as premature and misplaced the public celebrations by supporters of Senator Ede Dafinone, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had claimed the verdict ended Omo-Agege’s senatorial bid.

Omo-Agege confirmed that his name was properly submitted in the NDC membership register delivered to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the May 10 deadline and is duly reflected on the electoral body’s official published final list of candidates.

“The distinction is straightforward: The Court ruled on the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act; it did not issue a candidate-specific ruling against Omo-Agege,” he stated.

He further dismissed attempts to twist the judicial outcome, labeling claims that he had been knocked out of the election as mere political propaganda designed to mislead the electorate.

Maintaining that his campaign remains on track, Omo-Agege challenged his opponent to focus on performance and policy issues rather than distorting court judgments.

“If Dafinone wants the Senate seat, he should come to the field with his record, his programme and his arguments for another term,” he noted.

Omo-Agege concluded by asserting that the voters of Delta Central will ultimately decide their representative at the ballot box, noting that political euphoria cannot substitute for an actual electoral contest.
