The Federal Government has officially announced Thursday, October 1, 2026, as a public holiday in commemoration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, delivered the declaration on behalf of the government, extending warm congratulations to citizens both within the country and across the global diaspora.
According to a statement released by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister highlighted that Nigeria’s hospitality, unity, and rich talent pool position it as a leading global black nation.
Emphasizing that enduring peace and stability serve as essential pillars for national progress, Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the sacrifices and vision of the country’s founding fathers.
He called on the public to champion patriotism and work collectively toward constructing a resilient nation for upcoming generations, reiterating that a renewed Nigeria is within reach and remains the pride of Africa.
“As we celebrate 66 years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength,” he said.
“Our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built.”
The Minister affirmed that the present administration maintains an unwavering commitment to delivering a prosperous society as a lasting tribute to the country’s past leaders.
He also utilized the national broadcast to encourage citizens to actively practice unity, civic duty, peaceful harmony, and mutual respect across all communities.
Furthermore, Tunji-Ojo assured the public of ongoing government interventions aimed at fortifying internal security, upgrading public safety protocols, and fostering an environment where all citizens can safely reside, operate, and achieve their lawful goals.
