Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a blistering attack on former Rivers State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his claim that President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies contributed to the death of his mother.
Amaechi made the controversial assertion during an appearance on Channels Television, where he stated that soaring healthcare costs under the current administration made it increasingly difficult to afford necessary medications for his mother, Mary Amaechi, who passed away in July 2026 at the age of 89.
When asked directly during the broadcast if he blamed the administration for her passing, Amaechi affirmed, arguing that his mother was in good health prior to Tinubu taking office but suffered due to skyrocketing drug prices.
Reacting during a political event in Rivers State on Saturday, Wike expressed deep concern over Amaechi’s remarks, accusing him of exploiting his late mother’s memory for political leverage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“You know, it’s unfortunate. I thought, for whatever reason, that we must respect our parents,” Wike said.
The FCT minister specifically referenced comments where Amaechi suggested his mother would be happy in the afterlife if the ADC won the 2027 presidential election.
Wike dismissed the claim and declared that the party stood no chance at the polls.“But ADC will not win. No way!” Wike declared.
Wike strongly rejected Amaechi’s claim that financial hardship prevented him from purchasing medication, pointing to the former governor’s decades-long career in top public offices, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999–2007), Governor of Rivers State (2007–2015), and Minister of Transportation (2015–2023).
He questioned why Amaechi, given his political status, personal wealth, and network, could not secure support from family, associates, or his wife—whom Amaechi previously described as an industrialist—to cover medical expenses.
Pointing to the large turnout at Mary Amaechi’s funeral, Wike argued that numerous relatives and associates would have readily assisted had they been informed of any financial difficulty.
“People can descend so low to use your mother to play politics. Why? Why?” Wike asked, questioning whether Amaechi’s actions truly reflected those of a dutiful son.
Accusing his predecessor of misleading the public, Wike made reference to substantial real estate assets tied to Amaechi in Abuja and Rivers State before calling on Nigerians to pray for the peaceful repose of his late mother’s soul.
