Nigerians can now verify their residential addresses and access unique digital postcodes utilizing the Federal Government’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System rolled out by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST).
Rolled out nationwide on October 1, 2026, this infrastructure assigns an 11-character alphanumeric code to every addressable structure, streamlining precise location tracking and sharing.
The digital platform supports searches via street names, localized place names, existing postcodes, and common aliases, while certain listings incorporate homeowner identities where properties rely on informal local designations.
Here is the official procedure for locating your digital postcode and reviewing associated building records:
1. Access the Official NIPOST Portal
Navigate to the official portal at postcode.gov.ng and activate the “Find my postcode” feature.
Users can also install the dedicated NIPOST mobile app. The Android version is downloadable directly from the Google Play Store, whereas the iOS client is scheduled for future release.
2. Execute a Property Search
Input your specific house number, street nomenclature, district, or surrounding geographical descriptors into the query box.
Alternatively, explore records using designated place titles, regional postcodes, or known community aliases.
Review the search results carefully and cross-reference the integrated map interface with adjacent roadways, prominent landmarks, and neighboring structures to verify spatial accuracy.
3. Check for Homeowner Identifiers
Certain residential records display individual owners’ names because field personnel recorded conventional and informal descriptors during compilation.
NIPOST Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi, explained that field data gathering incorporated both structured and informal addressing styles to accommodate all settlements.
In neighborhoods lacking formal street signs or building numbering, properties are frequently recognized by the owner’s moniker.
To verify if your name is indexed, examine the text description tied to your building or search your name directly if it serves as a community landmark. Note that an unsuccessful name query does not imply your building lacks coverage, as codes attach strictly to physical structures rather than individuals.
4. Utilize Live Geolocation Services
If you are physically present at the destination, activate your device’s location services and grant the application positional access.
Select “Find My Postcode” to display your live coordinates and neighboring mapped properties, then tap your exact building to pull up its unique alphanumeric code.
Ensure precise selection, as adjacent properties maintain distinct digital codes.
5. Submit Corrections or Request Missing Postcodes
If property data contains inaccuracies, use the platform’s reporting tool to flag errors for review.
Unlisted structures can apply for assignment through the portal by submitting comprehensive location details and optional Google Maps coordinates.
NIPOST evaluates all submissions prior to updating regional database records.
6. Understand Postcode Functionality
The alphanumeric sequence identifies the physical building or address point rather than personal resident identities.
Occupants within a multi-family dwelling share the identical structural postcode alongside their specific apartment details, while relocating requires adopting the code assigned to the new address.
The overarching framework aims to modernize logistics, improve emergency response coordination, and streamline public service delivery nationwide.
Generating and sharing digital postcodes remains entirely free of charge across official platforms.
