The Government of the United Mexican States has officially granted diplomatic approval accepting author and political commentator Bemigho Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico.

Omokri disclosed the diplomatic clearance on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, confirming that the Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, formally delivered the official agrément to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me, Bemigho Reno Omokri, to serve as Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua, to the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency, Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Omokri shared via his official social media handle.

Under the full diplomatic mandate, the ambassador-designate will also represent Nigeria’s sovereign interests across Central America through concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua.

The diplomatic clearance resolves a months-long waiting period following President Bola Tinubu’s initial nomination of Omokri alongside several notable public figures in November 2025.

Following confirmation by the Senate in December 2025, President Tinubu approved the official postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners on March 6, 2026, designating Omokri to head Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in Mexico City.

The deployment had remained pending diplomatic protocol while host nations processed official clearances, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirming in August that formal approvals from a few host governments were being finalized.

Omokri had previously addressed public speculation regarding procedural delays during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, attributing the timeline to standard diplomatic administrative channels and preparation activities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

In international diplomacy, an agrément represents the formal consent granted by a receiving state before a foreign government’s nominated envoy can officially assume ambassadorial duties and present letters of credence.

Omokri, a former special assistant on new media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, now transitions into full-time diplomatic service as Nigeria seeks to strengthen trade, cultural, and bilateral relations across Latin and Central America.
