Alwan Hassan, a spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, has alleged that numerous ministers in Nigeria pay billions of naira to secure their cabinet appointments.
Hassan made the revelation on Thursday while featuring as a guest on Arise Television’s evening current affairs program, ‘Prime Time’.
Addressing the systemic nature of public office patronage, the party official clarified that the monetary demand for ministerial slots is a long-standing practice that predates the current ruling party.
A lot of ministers pay billions to be appointed, and the first thing they think of is how to recoup that money after being appointed,
Hassan stated.
It is the truth about our country and not just APC ministers; it started before the APC,
he noted.
The APC chieftain further emphasized that the practice of monetizing political appointments serves as a primary driver of systemic corruption in the public sector, as appointees prioritize recovering their initial financial outlay over public service delivery.
