According to the command, the station received a distress report at approximately 11:04 p.m., prompting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ajaokuta to lead a team of tactical officers to the scene.

Preliminary findings indicated that Corporal Yusuf, who was assigned to night duty, allegedly opened fire on Woman Corporal Onimisi before turning the firearm on himself.

However, media reports indicate that the two officers were previously involved in a romantic relationship that had recently turned sour. Sources familiar with the situation alleged that Yusuf was angered by Onimisi’s decision to end the relationship, leading to the deadly altercation.

Both officers were immediately rushed to separate medical facilities in a bid to save their lives, but attending medical personnel confirmed them dead on arrival. Their remains have since been deposited at the ASCO Hospital mortuary.

Crime scene investigators recovered an AK-47 service rifle along with four expended shell cartridges as evidence.

The case has been formally transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation to establish the exact timeline and underlying motives surrounding the fatal incident.

Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed deep shock over the tragic loss and extended his condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officers.

The command assured members of the public that verified updates would be communicated as the probe progresses while warning against spreading unverified speculation.
