The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of a ₦50,000 monthly cash relief intervention to vulnerable households across the country to cushion the impact of rising living costs.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, announced the launch of the scheme in an official statement released on Friday in Abuja.
Doro disclosed that the initiative, titled the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), is a presidential program structured to deliver direct financial relief to millions of struggling Nigerian families.
He explained that the emergency intervention was introduced to counter global food inflation and sharp increases in the prices of basic commodities affecting domestic household budgets.
“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” Doro stated.
The minister noted that the payout structure will undergo periodic reviews in response to macroeconomic shifts and living cost indices, with beneficiaries notified ahead of any potential adjustments.
He affirmed that the ministry is collaborating with licensed digital financial service providers to guarantee seamless, secure, and transparent disbursement of the funds.
According to him, selected beneficiaries will receive official SMS prompts from financial partners to confirm their consent prior to direct electronic transfers into their verified bank accounts or mobile wallets.
Doro emphasized that the selection process requires no formal application, agent registration, or processing fees from eligible citizens.
He cautioned the public against falling victim to scam syndicates, urging recipients never to share sensitive data such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) with unauthorized third parties.
“If you are unsure about any message, or anyone asks you for money, call the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222,” the minister advised.
He added that the NERSI framework complements existing federal social safety nets, building household financial resilience and reinforcing national economic stability.
The minister concluded that the initiative reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promising that the ministry will execute the disbursements with absolute integrity, dignity, and transparency.
