The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has strongly condemned an attack on his campaign convoy by suspected political thugs in Calabar, Cross River State, assuring citizens that political violence will not be permitted to compromise the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the declaration while addressing party faithful during a town hall meeting in Calabar on Wednesday, just hours after his motorcade was ambushed by assailants who smashed the windscreens and side mirrors of several campaign buses.

Reliving the experience, the former Anambra State governor recounted how he witnessed the confrontation firsthand and explained why he rejected advice from his security detail to divert his route when armed attackers emerged.

“They were throwing stones, and I saw people running back. And my security people said we should find another way because they have machetes and other things,” Obi stated.

“I asked, ‘In Nigeria? I am coming down to go and meet them.’ By the time they saw what was happening, they left. All these things happened because Nigerians allow it. We are not going to allow it in 2027,” he added.

Obi had arrived in the Cross River State capital for the political engagement alongside his wife, Margaret, and his presidential running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The Calabar assault marks the latest security breach encountered by the NDC campaign trail, occurring approximately two months after Obi’s motorcade faced a similar road blockade and violent confrontation with youth groups in Benue State.
